How to take screenshots?

Yesterday I received a mail by a school kid to teach him how to take screen shots (like the ones we have in the blog). He explained me that he needed some screen shots for his school project. So I decided to write down a tutorial to help kids like him. To start with we can take screen shots by 2 ways. First is by using Software like Fraps and second is by using ‘Print Scr’ key in your keyboard. The following tutorial is by using ‘Print Scr’ key. Ok the key is present on the top right side of the keyboard and has ‘Print Sc’ or ‘Prt Sc’ or something similar written. My Compaq laptop has ‘Prt Sc’. After you find it we can start with the process.

Here is how it is done.

1) Go to the screen you wish to take screenshot of. To explain you clearly I would take the screenshot of a small flash game from AddictingGames.

I'll use this image to get the screen shot of the game.

2) After you are ready to take the Screen Shot, Press the Print Screen button.

3) Now go to ‘Paint’ in your Windows.

4) Press ‘Ctrl + V’ to paste the screen

5) Select the required part. I’ll select the game part.

6) Now after you have selected the required part. Press ‘Ctrl + X’ to cut the selected part. Open a new paint document and press ‘Ctrl + V’ to paste.

7) Add text and other things if you wish. I’ll add the Blog2Tutorials watermark to the Image.

Added the watermark.

8) Save the Image file and use as you wish.

Import Brushes in PhotoShop

If you have been around internet for a while, you must be aware how does the graphics of the website attracts people's attention. Most of the professional designers use Photoshop for creation and editing of images. Photoshop is a powerful and very advanced tool for the purpose. The flexibility it provides to the users adds to its reputation. One of the biggest advantage of Photoshop is that we can download and use custom brushes, gradients etc in the software.

Many newbies, download the brushes but don't know how to make them work or install them in PS.

Here is how you can do it.
1) Start your photoshop. I'll be using PS CS2, but all the versions of photoshop have similar method of importing brushes.

2) Now goto 'Edit' in Menu Bar, and press 'Preset Manager'.

3) This opens the preset manager dialoug box. Now press 'Load' button.

4) Browse to the Brush file you downloaded, and press 'Load'

That is all. Now you can use the brush set in your creations.
Let your imagination flow and do show me your creations.

LOL Limewire Pirate Song

Ok most of the people wont find this thing new. People that have been around internet must have already tried this, but it will be fun for newbies. Try this small thing, and have loads of laughter. =D

This does not require any screen shot but since its a tradition of our blog to explain with screens, I will provide you with one.

1) Turn on your speakers. And do increase the volume.
2) Go to Google.com
3) Type 'lol limewire'. obviously without quotes.
4) Now press 'I'm feeling lucky'.
5) Dont laug out too hard or your neighbours will call the cops. :p

Create your own eBook

Wikipedia defines “an e-book (short for electronic book, or EBook), also known as a digital book, is an e-text that forms the digital media equivalent of a conventional printed book, sometimes restricted with a digital rights management system.” In addition to regular text, an eBook may also contain multimedia and hyperlinks to make it more attractive and interactive. The availability of eBook reader in laptops, mobile phones, PDAs and other popular electronic gadgets has made the format very popular. The fanciest thing about eBooks’ these days is that anyone and everyone can write or create his or her own eBook. This small article will help you to learn how to create an eBook in the easiest way. All you need is Microsoft Office and a small freeware software called DoPdf. Use Google to search for the software and download it. Since it’s a freeware, you don’t have to spend a single penny to get the software. After downloading the software, install it. Installation will not take more than a minute and is very simple. Just press next >> next >> next and you are ready.

Now the most time consuming and interesting part of creating your eBook. Before you may proceed, you must be having the content that you want to put in the eBook. By content I mean, the text or data or media that will be published in the book.

Some tips on writing an eBook:

Make the eBook attractive. Use colors and different fonts to beautify it. But DON’T OVER DO. Don’t use more than 3 colors, use them to make a theme and stick to it.
Give a good background to your eBook.
Use proper header and footer.
Make a unique and attractive cover complete with author name and book title. A short description never harms anyone.

Now after the content is ready and formatting is set to suit your taste and style, the main thing starts. Its not as difficult as it sounds and won’t take more than 10 seconds.

Press Ctrl+P to open the ‘Print Dialog Box’. In the dialog box, select the printer as doPdf.

Now press ok and it opens DoPdf dialog box.

Tick mark the box against ‘Embed Fonts'.

Now press OK. Your own eBook is created.

Remote Desktop Access

Ever heard of Remote Desktops? Commonly reffered to as RDA or RDP or simply RD, Remote Desktops are very popular these days. As the words read, remote desktop is nothing but a computer located at some place other than your home and you can access the system from your personal computer or laptop. Remote means a location away from the system's location. You can do almost everything on a remote desktop that you can do on your home computer like play music, videos, pictures, work on softwares, surf internet, play games and what not. Although most of the RD providers dont provide you with administrative rights, but there are some nice guys who allow you to use administrative rights and install your programs and perform other administrative activities. Most RDs are servers with latest technology configuration. RD sellers provide customers with various options when it comes to bandwidth, hard disk capacity, and again configuration of the server. Most of the time sellers sell 1 server to not more than 10-15 users. Although that number may go up or down depending on the configuration of the server.

After you make payment for a RD, you recieve an IP Address, UserName and Password for your New RD Account. The IP address is the address of your new remote desktop and username and password refers to the user created on the RD.

Connecting to a RD:

For Windows:
Start >> Run or press Windows + R
Type "mstsc.exe" (without quotes) and press Enter

The Remote desktop connection windows opens and asks you to Enter the IP Address of the Server you want to connect to.

After enetring the IP, Press Press 'Options'. On pressing options a lot of options are given to you. Enter the UserName as provided by the seller. Explore other tabs and features for different experience. The look and performance of the RD can be decided using various options available. The settings that best suits your needs and internet connection should be made and finally press 'Connect'.

After pressing 'Connect'

Windows connects to the server and prompts you for password. Enter the password provided to you by the seller. After entering the password press 'OK'.

The windows on RD confirms the account information and connects you to your Remote Desktop.
You can now perform any kind of activity you want on your RD like you do it on your home computer.

How to download Youtube videos?

When I was new to the vast world of internet, I was like any other newbie very keen to try everything I had heard about the internet. Downloading songs, playing games, streaming movies, facebook, twitter, google, email and all that stuff. When youtube was launched, the concept was somewhat new. I mean who thought you would be able to watch and share your routine and special moments with the whole world. But whenever I used to come across a video that had something unique and grabbed my attention, I always wondered, why dont these youtube guys give an option to download videos? The fact that I could not download them, made me somewhat sad. And like anyone would do, I googled 'How to download videos from Youtube' and after going through some pages, reading some tricks, trying some programs and scripts, I finally came up with a simple and very easy solution - www.KeepVid.com.
I have been using the site now for more than 2 years and never had a problem with it. What I like most about KeepVid is that they provide many options regarding the resolution and quality we want. Lets start with a short and quick tutorial on how to download videos from Youtube with the help of KeepVid.

1) Copy the URL of the video you want to download. URL is the adress of the webpage containing video. URL can be found in the adress bar, where you right tech2day.blogspot.com.

2) Now go to www.keepvid.com and a pop-up appears showing a message regarding new certificate. Press YES. Now paste the copied URL in the text box provided.

3) Press the download button. Wait for a second and many options with different quality will appear. Click on the desired one and your download will start automatically.

You Should enable java in your browser because the scripts demands so.

The only drawback of this method is that, the videos whose embedding is off, cant be downloaded using this method.

Another application I found useful for downloading Youtube videos is Internet Download Manager or popularly known as IDM. This tool has a FireFox plugin that automatically allows users to download videos at a click of a button.

This is a very popular program but unfortunately its not free. You can use google to find the purchasing site for the program.
